Bij de inauguratie van mijn nieuwe website wil ik even opmerken dat de 44e president van Amerika niet zwart is. Zijn vader was zwart, zijn moeder blank, dus Obama is multi-etnisch. Zulke mensen heten mulatten in Amerika, maar misschien is dat onderhand wel net zo ouderwets als halfbloed in Holland. Indo’s wensten zo niet langer genoemd te worden maar gezien de vele raciale kruisbestuivingen noemen veel multi-etnische kids zich tegenwoordig gewoon halfbloedje. Klinkt meer als een koosnaam dan halfbloed. Dit terzijde.
Gezien Obama’s levensloop (Hawaï, Indonesië, Noord-Amerika) en zijn aanraking met verschillende culturen, talen en godsdiensten, is Obama ook nog multicultureel te noemen. Multiculturaliteit is geen logisch gevolg van multi-etniciteit. Je kunt bijvoorbeeld als gemengd Kaapverdisch-Nederlands geboren worden maar een puur Hollandse opvoeding krijgen (ja, die bestaat nog). Misschien kun je Barack Hussein Obama II het best een kosmopoliet noemen. Hij is geboren onder het zodiakteken Leeuw, dat ben ik ook, dus dat zit wel goed (smile). Zijn Chinese teken is Os, dat is toevallig mijn reisgezel (ik ben geboren in het uur van de Os – second smile). Alsof de hemel een wil heeft, staan we aan de vooravond van het jaar van de Os. Dat begint aanstaande maandag op 26 januari 2009. Volgens Theodora Lau krijgt de Os een goed jaar, al zullen zijn plannen wat vertraging kunnen ondervinden (Uit: Chinese astrologie; het handboek – Theodora Lau; Kosmos-Z&K Uitgevers, Utrecht: 1981/1999). Mij lijkt dan ook niet dat Obama wel even de chaos die zijn voorganger buytengaets heeft gesticht, zal kunnen opruimen.
Het valt te hopen dat Obama niet door de een of andere idioot overhoop geschoten wordt. Een politicus die zó mateloos populair is, die loopt per definitie dat gevaar. Ik schrijf dit op het moment waarop Obama zo vermetel is zijn limousine uit te stappen en zwaaiend naar de menigte een stukje gaat wandelen, zijn vrouw naast zich. De CNN-verslaggevers houden de adem in. Dat is nog gevaarlijker dan wat Kennedy deed: rijden in een open auto, toen hij in Dallas doodgeschoten werd. Dat was in 1963, het jaar van het vredelievende Konijn nota bene (ik val onder dat Chinese teken – third and last smile).
Opvallend is dat niet alleen blanken maar doorgaan met roepen dat Obama zwart is. Nee, hiermee lijken de zwarten zelfs voorop te lopen. Vooruit dan, Obama oogt zwart, dus voor de zwarte gemeenteschap is het kennelijk makkelijker zichzelf in deze charismatische leider te herkennen. Racisme begint uiteindelijk bij het uiterlijk, daarna volgt de rest van de beeldvorming en de clichés die daaruit voortkomen. Maar nogmaals, Obama is niet zwart. Natuurlijk hebben zowel zwarten als blanken er baat bij hem zwart te noemen. Beide groepen hebben wat in te halen. Zwarten willen gelijkwaardigheid, die er, ondanks Obama’s verkiezing, nog lang niet is. En blanken willen van hun schuldgevoel af, waar ze nog wel even mee bezig zijn.
Een cynicus zou ook nog kunnen zeggen dat het voor blanken makkelijker is een zwarte af te poeieren dan een blanke-zwarte als hij zijn werk niet goed doet. Door zijn deels blanke afkomst eenvoudig te negeren, hoeven ze zelf niet in de spiegel te kijken. Maar: negeren ze die blanke afkomst eigenlijk wel? Het is wel heel opvallend hoeveel blanke Amerikanen met vlaggetjes staan te zwaaien, al zijn het vooral de vrouwelijke kiezers die de man in het zadel hebben geholpen.
Hoe dan ook: de mulatten lopen fijn de kans mis om eens in de schijnwerpers te staan. Ik voel natuurlijk met ze mee, want ik ben ook een etnisch en culturele mix. Zodra de mensen, met de massamedia voorop, ergens geen duidelijk etiket op kunnen plakken, wordt het allemaal te moeilijk voor ze. Toch wordt het allemaal café au lait in de toekomst. Obama is het al.

And the quickly rising star of Barack Obama, has had such an extraordinary effect on people all over the world, it is very natural to want to be associated with it. I am, in the first instance, referring to the fact that you are both born under the starsign Leo.
Now for the matter under discussion: the fact that Barack Obama is not black, but that he is of mixed raced origin. Yet people, most people call him black. Especially the black community itself, which immediately rules out the taint of racism.
They want him to be black.
They want a leader who is non-white.
They want Martin Luther King’s struggles and their own, to end, and his death to be vindicated, and his dream of a more equal society to come true, and this is as close as it has ever come. This desire, this euphoria overrides everything else.
Will Smith the actor was overheard associating Barack Obama’s history with that of slavery. This, as we know, is an error. What does it mean when people bring you into their own history, when they don’t share the same background? Should he have rejected that. Should Obama have said: I will not stand for president until every single one of you, calls me exactly what I am.
People alas, will forever be lazy in their correct use of language, in their precise description and identification of race of culture and religion. I myself know what it is like to have my own multi-racial, multi-cultural background mispronounced, (by white, black and mixed-race people alike), and by people around to be generally misinformed. Language that most essential of human communication, will forever be a tower of Babel, even with people who share the same nationality.
And are all those white liberals, and even a number of conservatives, really so keen to shed their post-kolonial guilt. They have endured at least eight years of the worst, certainly the least intelligent president they did not themselves elect, who did a lot of damage worldwide and in his own country.
There is one statement of yours Mr. Birney, which somewhat puzzles me:
‘de Mulatten lopen fijn de kans mis, om eens in de schijnwerpers te staan’.
Forgive me but I was under the impression that the ‘spotlight’ was for people, who have done something exceptional, or from whom something exceptional is expected. To be of mixed race, isn’t by itself a qualification to deserve the spotlight. At least that is my opinion.
Barack Obama has become President of the USA, because he’s an intelligent man with a new vision fo America. He’s a man of integrity who works very hard. He’s also a very cool guy. That he is of mixed race is of secondary importance. He’s a great individual on whose shoulders an almost unbearable burden of expectation rests, and someone who has inherited a great many problems from his unworthy predecessor.
And yes, the future is indeed cafe au lait. But please, more people like Barack Hussein Obama II
